Sorry its been so long. I'll make up for it by starting off with funny stuff!! This sign was at the hotel where my church meets. The top half was cut off but it is in Spanish. The part you see is the English translation. It's hard to say if the true meaning of the sign was miscontrued or if it was right on the money!!
Funny story #2...
I went to the movies with my friend, Fabiola. Very rarely do I go to the movies without getting popcorn and a Sprite, so, Fabiola and I got in the refreshment line. Fabiola saw some friends and waved at them and then I looked at her and said "Papacitos?" thinking I was asking her if she wanted some popcorn. She looked at me strange and shook her head in a way that led me to believe that we were not understanding each other. She knows English but I try to speak Spanish with her as much as I can. Anyway, I said, "That is the word for popcorn, right?" and she started laughing. When she started laughing, I remembered what the word "papacitos" meant. It is a slang word that they use here for hot guys. She thought I was asking if her friends were hot. We both started thinking about what the concession lady would have thought about me if I asked her for a " papacito regular". Anyway, Fabiola reminded me of the correct word for popcorn, which was palomitas and I was spared from being the laughing stock of the movie theater. I knew it started with a P!
Funny story #3...
On Fridays I give out chocolate to my kids to reward the ones who do well in class and speak English all week. I also give them their homework folders on Friday so their parents can see how they are doing in class. Their parents are supposed to look at the work and sign the folder so I know they have seen it. The kids usually aren't as excited about this as they are the chocolate. Anyway, one Friday I dismissed the kids before I passed out their folders. One of the students reminded me and so I asked a couple of students to round up the kids who left already so I could give them their folders. Ramon volunteered to be one of the students to round kids up. About a minute later, Arnol runs into the classroom looking strangely excited to be getting his folder. He took one look at what I was doing and said "Ahh, Ms. Kelly, Ramon lied. He said you were giving more chocolate." I could not stop laughing!!
OK that's all the funny stories I can remember right now. I guess I should write more often so that I don't let any slip through the cracks. Anyway, I am doing well. The weather is surprisingly cold here. It's been in the 60's, which is extrememly low for Honduras. I actually had to turn my fans off. My class is doing great although I do have some students that I am concerned about. One of them I'm convinced has ADHD and it is so difficult watching him struggle to finish his assignments knowing that he is so smart but simply cannot focus on anything long enough to complete it. I have been very hard on him because I thought he just didn't want to work but after consulting my DSM-IV book, I can see now that he has many of the syptoms for ADHD and I will be setting up a meeting with his Aunt tomorrow to talk to her about it. Please pray that God would help me explain the situation to her well so that she understands. Also that she would take him to a doctor and get some medicine that will help him to focus. I really believe this will improve his grades so much. I am also still concerned about my student that doesn't understand much English. He has improved so much. He seems to understand and speak a lot more English and he turns in most of his work now but his comprehension is still not great and between that and his constant desire to play rather than listen, he is doing poorly in some areas. I also have another student who is struggling a lot to understand. She is so sweet and I can tell she is trying but she really has difficulties with most subjects. I suspect she has a learning disability but I haven't been able spend much time with her privately to see if I can figure out what it is. Please pray for these three students and that God would give me wisdom on how to love and teach them. Their names are Daniel, Jonathan, and Abigail.
Also, there are a couple of families in need of prayer right now. I am currently the only missionary at New Generation because the Fishers had to return home for awhile. Roy has been diagnosed with cancer. They have been in the states for about a month and Roy has started treatment. He seems to be doing well but the chemo wipes out a lot of his energy. There is also a huge financial strain on the family due to high medical expenses. In addition to all this there are other health issues with other family members and personal struggles with Roy and Maxine's children. Please pray that God would heal Roy and other sick members of the Fisher family and provide for all of their financial needs. Also please pray for wisdom on how to deal with their personal struggles and that God would give strength and wisdom to Rachel, Jonathan, and David (Roy and Maxine's children) to make good, God-honoring choices for themselves. The other family in need of prayer is the Oakley family. This family's struggle has been a wonderful example of the power of prayer. Their youngest was thought to have cancer when they found a strange lump on her leg. The doctors weren't quite sure what it was but they were pretty certain it was cancerous. I know that this family was covered in prayer from all over the world and when the doctors took a second look they discovered that it was not cancer after all but some sort of infection. We are very grateful to God for hearing and answering our prayers but prayers are still needed. Doctors still need wisdom on how to care for her infection and the family needs prayers about career choices that need to be made that will possibly involve relocating. Please pray that God would help them to learn and understand what He wants them to do and that whatever happens the family would support and encourage one another.
As for me, please pray that God would help me to get rid of my new, annoying, little roommate. His name is Bob the Rat and he decided to move in without my permission when I went to Miami for the weekend to renew my VISA. I tried to be nice by leaving food out for him but he is so rude that he has rejected my hospitality. Never mind that it's laced with poison, he is a rat in Honduras and I believe it is considered culturally rude to refuse someone's invitation to eat food here. So things just aren't working out with Bob and he needs to go. Please pray that God would allow Bob and I to part on good terms. By that I mean that Bob would die as well as any of his friends and family members that he decided to invite to my apartment! Also, please pray that God would provide more people to partner with me financially. As I've mentioned before, they changed the immigration laws this year and the most convenient and cost efficient countries to travel to are no longer accepting to renew my VISA. So travel costs are much more expensive. I do not know what exactly will happen if I am unable to afford to leave the country before my VISA expires but I'm pretty sure it would include a hefty fine. So please pray that God provides the money I need to leave the country every 3 months safely.
Well, I think that's enough sharing for now. Please check out the Prayers, Praises, and Needs post and also Partnership Opportunities to find out how to get in touch with me. I love you all and I'll try to write again before the end of the year.
